100 Subitizing Slides & 10 Challenge Patterns

With a click, a pattern of dots appears on your screen.  Instantly your students tell how many.  They don’t count the dots.  Instead they simply know the total at a glance.

Subitizing – when a person looks at a small set of objects and instantly detects the total without counting.  It’s a powerful process and a truly remarkable one.

I have a new resource for you.  100 Subitizing Slides & 10 Challenge Patterns.

There are 10 sets, and each set includes 10 subitizing slides and 1 challenge pattern.  In between each slide, I’ve placed a blank slide.  As you click through the slides the effect will be that the slides are appearing and disappearing – at the rate that you choose.  The blank slide will also allow you to toggle back and forth to an image or simply move forward to the next image.

Then, after 10 quick subitizing experiences, you’ll see one challenge image which will be duplicated several times on the screen.

Download the sets, try it out in your classroom, and let me know how it goes!

For my educator friends who have access to Google Slides, but do not have access to PowerPoint, this post is for you.  Since Google Slides does not have the animation that makes the Splats become transparent, the Splat! reveal does not work in Slides.  Now – with these materials – it will.  I’ve rewritten the first 20 Splat! lessons and the first 20 Fraction Splat! lessons with a different method so they will now include the reveal when using Google Slides.

The content of the lessons is the same as the original lessons.

Visit these links to see the original videos about how to use the Splat! and the Fraction Splat! slides.

Quick Note:  The file sharing power of Google Drive is impressive and highly useful.  However, for the purposes of sharing these resources, I need to use a method that I can personally maintain, update and support – and I’ve learned that the best way to provide resources from my blog is through the download links and the sign-up forms.

I hope you enjoy these Splats! formatted to work in Google Slides!

Cube Conversations is a set of 80 (eighty!) animated lessons designed to promote visually rich math discourse.  I’ve designed these lessons to invite many voices and vantage points into classroom conversations.

Much like Splat!, you control the animation with a few simple clicks  – and each click presents an opportunity for students to see and discuss an image in new ways.

Of course, there is also a sense of mystery, much like what your students felt in Splat!  The end of each slide includes The Reveal, when the answer is shown.

I hope your classroom will be filled with rich math talk, inspiring insights from your students, and moments of celebration as you guide your class through Cube Conversations!

Watch the video, download the lessons, and allow your students to amaze your with their visual math thinking.
